My name is Isabel Layton, and this is my fourth year at Roland Park Country School. In Ninth grade, I took the first two STEM Classes, STEM IA and STEM IB, which focused on science and engineering, respecticavelly. During tenth grade, I participated in the last two STEM classes, STEM IIA and STEM IIB, which focused on technology and math, respecticavelly. In addition, junior year, I am doing an in-school intenship. During this time, I will analyze PSAT data, locate Roland Park Country Schools' strengths and weaknesses, and report my information back to the Assistant Head of School. In the future, I plan to pursue science as a career path.
During our first STEM Class, we discovered the wonders of science though the observation of grass growth in different conditions, and the effect of visual distractions on short term memory.
My group measured the precipitation, and how it affected the growth of grass. This experiment was done over one semester. This is our final poster presentation
My group studied the effect of minor visual distractions on short term memory. This is our final project paper.
Our seccond semester STEM course allowed us to explore the world of engineering through challenges such as the "Mars Rover Competition" where we were scored upon the amount of challenges we can complete.
My group created and programmed a Mars Rover designed to venture specific obstacles in a final test. Here is our final presentation about our Rover.
During the first STEM Course of my seccond year in the program, there was a specific focus on Technology. We had the opportunity to complete a formal Science Paper and choose a math or science piece, learn about it, and create a presentation to educate our peers on our subject of choice.
We learned about the Five Postulates: Euclidian, Spherical, and Hyperbolic Geometry. Here is my final paper summarizing the main points about each.
My group chose Topology as the topic to learn about and create a powerpoint on, where we expanded upon and explained it.
STEM IIB
The final STEM Class had a focus upon Technology. We made sunscreen packaging and a sustainability project to make a project prototype out of recycled materials.
We studied the marketing, avaliability, and practicality of sunscreen containers before creating our own; that is a link to a powerpoint highlighting the finished project.
Sustainability Project Prototype
We created a sustainable project prototype out of recycled materials, to lessen environmental burden.
Research Internship
The final step for our STEM Internship was to complete a Research Internship, we had to put in an Internship Proposal and complete the internship through Junior Year.
This is what I sent to the school highlighting the basics of my internship, as well as a tentative outline with our goals for the year.
