Erin Waire's STEM Portoflio

Hi my name is Erin Waire and I am a current senior at Roland Park Country School. I have taken part in the STEM institute at Roland Park since 9th grade. I have taken four semester course of STEM. Each course focused on different aspects of science, technology, engineering, and technology which included environmental projects, presentations, and research papers. In addition to the Stem courses I have taken computer science, statistics, calculus, and engineering courses. Also, I participater in the Environmental Science Summer Research Experience for Young Women. During this internship, I published a paper on the influence of high sulfate levels on soil fungi reproduction.

In STEM 1A, I did a project on seasonal change, my group in particular tracked the animals in the woods behind the school, and a short term memory project, in which my partner and I tested the effects of flashing objects on one's memory.

In STEM 1B, I programmed a robot that would travel across different types of terrain on Mars. The presentation contains the programs used during this project.

In STEM 2A, I exlpored the properties of euclidean, hyperbolic, and spherical geometries through the programs Scratch and Matlab. I also did a presentation on Waclaw Sierpinski and his relationship to topology.

In STEM 2B, I completed two projects, one on sunscreen and one on the environment. In the sunscreen project, I researched chemicals, often found in sunscreen, created a sunscreen formula, and built a durable package that could survive through multiple testing. In the environment project, I worked to create a product that would dim or brighten artificial light depending on the amount of natural light in the room.

During my junior year in Chemistry, I completed a research paper on the effects of varying concentraions of Magnesium Chloride and Sodium Chloride on concrete in .

During my senior year, I completed an inernship focusing on Cystic Fibrosis and lung transplants.
